STUDENTS CRIME STOPPERS
Student's Crime Stoppers started in 1990 here in Guam, in the middle and senior high schools.
The Student Crime Stoppers program is designed to have cases be dealt with in a school setting designed by the administrators wherever possible. The cases handled are only those that happen within school premises or at school events. In most cases it is the principal’s discretion whether or not to involve the Police. The idea is deal with the issue quickly and fairly in the school community and to possibly avoid putting youths in an already crowded justice system.
Every school with a Student Crime Stoppers program has their own respective Student board who is responsible for implementing the program in their school. They publicize the crime, keep records for their school, decide if their is to be a reward paid, and how much. They also communicate with the island Crime Stoppers coordinator, who arranges for reward payments as per instructions of the student board.
STUDENT CRIME STOPPER MECHANICS
- Information on a crime committed in relation to a local school.
- You can call 477-HELP ( 4357) and informs the operator that you
are a student caller You do not have to give your name and
Crime Stoppers does not utilize caller ID.
- Information is taken in strict confidence and the callers are issued
a code number. It is the responsibility of the caller to remember
and protect their code numbers, since this is the only means of identifying
them in relation to the information they give.
- The operator asks the caller to call back in a few weeks for an
update on their file and passes the information to a law enforcement
investigator.
- If a reward is to be paid the caller is given instructions on how
to pick up the cash reward.
Re-enactments:
The local media have been active Crime Stoppers partners since inception, producing Crime Stoppers re-enactments of crimes here in Guam. Response to a particular re-enactment upon broadcast varies from immediate to a long period of time; nevertheless once a call is made the probability of solving a case becomes high.
Crimes of the Week:
Each week the Crime Stoppers coordinator selects an unsolved crime and sends all the details and description regarding this crime to all participating media organization for broadcasting & publication. In most cases these crime scripts are used as a regular Crime Stoppers feature and in some as story narration.
